Best Way to Make Star-Quality Hairstyles

Celebrities and models all have one thing in common – a gorgeous head of hair. Nicky Clarke – the celebrity hairdresser – and superstylist Guido present three different looks so that you, too, can have superstar hair.

Nicky Clarke, with his Mayfair salon, VIP room and three-month waiting list, is hairdresser to the stars: Patsy Kensit, Liz Hurley, Gwyneth Paltrow, David Bowie, Andie MacDowell and Jemima Khan, to name but a few. He recently collaborated with the cutting-edge stylist Guido to create several modern hairstyles that have a touch of Nicky’s coiffed look mixed with Guido’s minimalist feel. ‘Modern yet glamorous,’ is how Nicky defines the three hairstyles featured here. ‘The great thing about these styles is that as well as being classics, they are extremely versatile,’ explains Nicky’s creative director, Andrew Clark.

To sport a star-quality hairstyle a la Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, et al, or to achieve one of Nicky and Guido’s three looks, you need to follow these all important tips:

  • Get a good cut.
  • Rev up your hair’s sheen with an excellent conditioner and regular treatments.
  • Equip yourself with the right styling tools, brushes and hairstyling products.

Look 1 – the modern set

With this look, Nicky and Guido have created a modern take on a ‘big-hair’ classic. It has all the glamour created by root lift and body, but the straight ends and swept-back look give it a modern twist. Andrew tells you how to achieve it:

  • Step 1 – Blast your hair with a hairdryer until it is about eighty per cent dry, blow-drying it to create volume by sweeping it in the opposite direction to which it naturally falls.
  • Step 2 – Tip your head upside down and spritz the roots with a volumising product like Nicky’s Hairomatherapy Lift, Thicken and Shine Spray.
  • Step 3 – Take sections of hair from the front (approximately two inches from the hairline), then wind the hair in a backwards direction around a few big Velcro rollers (about two inches in diameter). Leave in for ten minutes and then remove the rollers.
  • Step 4 Brush your hair through. If you find that the ends are flicking up, flaten them by running straightening irons through your hair -swiftly so as not to cause damage.

Look 2 – curls

This is a relaxed, up-to-date version of a timeless look. By coaxing and separating the curls, this style gives a modern feel to naturally curly hair. Even if you haven’t been blessed with a mop of curls, you can achieve this look from scratch with curling tools and a bit of patience. But take note – as Andrew points out, not all types of hair will curl or stay curly: ‘The best hair to curl is very fine hair. Hair that is too straight or too heavy will drop quickly.’ For those with naturally curly hair

Step 1

Shampoo and condition your hair with products designed for curly hair as other preparations may add weight.

Step 2

To increase the hair’s natural volume, tip your head upside down and blast your hair with a hairdryer until it is almost dry. Do not scrunch.

Step 3

Spray a little serum over the palms of both hands, then smooth a fine layer of it over your hair. If you are using liquid serum, rub your hands together to emulsify the serum before applying it to your hair. If you prefer, you can use mousse or wax.

Step 4

Tease and loosen your curls. Each natural curl should be separated three times.

Look 3 – textured bob

‘Sexy and tousled’, says Nicky about this decidedly stylish, textured version of a basic bob. With choppy layers having been cut into it to add shape, the hair is then swept forward, which has a softening and flattering effect on the face. Playing devil’s advocate, however, Andrew says that there’s no point in torturing yourself by trying to get your hair to fall in a direction that it doesn’t want to: ‘If you are unsure as to which direction your hair naturally falls, ask your hairdresser,’ he stresses. It is also essential to remember that good-looking short hair depends on the cut, so if you are

going for the chop, find the very best hairdresser.

Step 1

Starting off with damp hair, blast with a hairdryer until it is about eighty per cent dry, then spritz with a styling spray.

Finish blow-drying brushing it forward.

Step 3

For the final touch, add a little serum, and tousle.
